You Are My Sunshine....

Stacy's mother sang this song to her as a child, and she, in turn, sings it to her 3 offspring. This was to be a 'Memory' chest at the foot of her bed in her v e r y purple bedroom. Initially, she wanted her children's names intertwined on the top, but then was inspired to have these lyrics painted on top of the chest when she saw the song on a wall hanging in a furniture store. Choosing on a font was difficult; and I used a friend's Cricut machine to cut uniform letters, but ultimately I decided to go with a mix of fonts as the words permitted across the top.

Before, it was a sturdy, maple piece that had been in her family for many years, but stored in the basement.

I painted a large sunburst in layers on the surface, bringing in shades of the Plummy color at the edges and in a bit of a crosshatch manner. Then I used the Mustard-y color as a glaze over top of the distressed plum base.

It was necessary to darken up the 'my', ever so light.

Working with these shades was definitely a leap from my color comfort zone, but Stacy is a purple person.

"You are my sunshine.
My only Sunshine.
You make me happy,
When skies are gray.
You'll never know dear,
How much I love you,
Please don't take my sunshine away!"

As ever,
